The science

What exosomes are, and where these come from.

Diagram: a stem cell releases MSC exosomes, which travel to a receptor cell

What are exosomes?

Exosomes are like tiny messengers. They carry information between cells, helping them communicate and do their jobs.

MSC exosomes are nano-sized packages secreted by specialized cells known as mesenchymal stem cells, or MSCs.

Researchers are studying stem cell-derived exosomes in a number of areas, skin health among them. As of now, there are no FDA-approved exosome products available in the United States.

Where do they come from?

The MSCs are sourced from Wharton’s Jelly, found in the human umbilical cord. Wharton’s Jelly protects the umbilical vessels from twisting and compression during fetal development.

The umbilical cords are donated by patients who have had healthy full-term pregnancies.

Exosomes vs stem cells

Exosomes are not cells. They are far smaller, and they work differently: an exosome delivers its cargo to other cells.

Not freeze-dried

Some exosome brands preserve their product by lyophilization. The sample is frozen, then the water is removed under vacuum. The result is stable at room temperature.

The trade-off is in the exosome itself. Its lipid bilayer is delicate, and lyophilization disrupts it. The process also introduces added chemicals, so the result is not entirely pure.

For these reasons, the lab that makes our exosomes has left this technique out.

Quality standards

How each batch is made and checked.

  • Third-party tested

Batches are tested by a third-party lab. A third-party virology report is there to reduce the risk of viral contamination.

  • ISO-5 cleanrooms, cGMP

All product is made in ISO-5 cleanrooms at facilities that comply with Current Good Manufacturing Practice.

  • FDA Drug Master File

The manufacturer has submitted a Drug Master File, which gives the FDA access to information on the product and on its manufacturing practices and processes. A Drug Master File is not an FDA approval.

With every batch

A Certificate of Analysis.

A certificate of analysis comes with each batch. It records that the product was tested and what the tests found.

Questions

Good to know before you request.

Are exosome products approved by the FDA?
No. There are currently no FDA-approved exosome products available in the United States, and stem cell-derived exosomes are not approved by the FDA for use as drugs.
Are exosomes the same as stem cells?
No. Exosomes are nano-sized packages that stem cells release. They cannot turn into other cell types and they do not carry live DNA.
Where do the exosomes come from?
From mesenchymal stem cells sourced from Wharton’s Jelly in donated human umbilical cords, after healthy full-term pregnancies.
What sizes do the topicals come in?
All three come in 15 ml and 30 ml.
How should the topical gel be stored?
At room temperature, for up to 18 months.
Does anything work against them?
For the face, certain skincare products can make exosome products less effective, especially retinoids and acid-based products such as glycolic acid and salicylic acid.
What paperwork comes with an order?
A certificate of analysis comes with each batch.
